ERITREA – KEREN

Eritrea Kèren: Project DMK FLOUR: 12 TONS OF FLOUR FOR SETTLEMENTS IN ERITREA

For more than three years, For a Smile Onlus, together with our “ambassador” Dr. Carbone, has been helping to put the smile back on the faces of hundreds of children from the communities of Keren.

Even back in 2006, For a Smile supported the work of Dr. Carbone in helping the village of Keren which was in the midst of a serious health emergency as a result of the high rate of infant mortality.

For a Smile’s centre is located in a village with a population of 25000: the centre takes care of patients suffering from consumption and AIDS. There are also day hospital activities for polio, asthma, malaria, diarrhoea and hunger. Poverty is the most common cause of child mortality. The centre has started a very important program, the “Women’s Project”, which looks after pregnant women, right from conception to the third year of the child. The centre lodges 260 children and the space at their disposal is very small: a single room of 100 sqm. The surgery also needs to be enlarged, with the construction of a new area.

In the area of Kéren, For a Smile Onlus supports projects of San Vincenzo’s fraternal order, a group operating in many different places throughout the world. In particular, thanks to Doctor Giorgio Carbone, the organization has come to support the project increasing space and enabling the structure to host many more children. As a humanitarian project, it has so far been a great success and has provided food and a home for 300 Eritrean children for over a year.

Thanks to your precious support, For a Smile Onlus has been able to organise the setting up of a container – which should arrive in Eritrea in the next two months – loaded with 21 tons of DMK, a special highly-nourishing flour particularly adapted to deal with child malnutrition. After reaching Massawa port, the flour will be delivered to the Nuns of the Order of S. Vincenzo de' Paoli, who will then distribute it to the children and their relatives who live within the various centres and communities run by the nuns (villages of Hel Hel, Kéren, Decameré, Monoxeito and Hebo).
