Since October 2006, For a Smile Onlus has supported the Centre of Communication and Tsunami Alarm in the Sri Lankan village of Peraliya, known around the world because of the tragic railway disaster caused by the tsunami of December 2004.
Despite two years having passed since the disaster, the communities that were hit by the tsunami are still in desperate need of our aid. For a Smile Onlus has started a new project for such areas, in collaboration with Oscar Gubernati, director and cinematographic producer who, for over a year, has acted as volunteer and has already co-ordinated relief activities in Peraliya.
As well as making a documentary which testifies to the disaster and the subsequent struggle to return to normality, Oscar and his collaborators gave life to a Centre of Communication (open 24/7) and Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM), an organisation which monitors anomalous waves and other natural phenomena.
For a Smile participated in a collection to raise money for an educational program carried out by the centre’s bookshop, now open and used by more than 500 children from the nearby villages.
The bookshop has a range of books in English and offers courses in computer science and work education. The funds collected by For a Smile Onlus are to support the child victims of the tsunami and to offer families the chance to receive education and first aid kits for emergencies.
